Explanation of why the VPN can't see your google searches

ema's explanation from the recent times:

You have normal VPNs, which pass your traffic to the website you are browsing and pass the responses back to you. They can see which website you browsing because they have to know where to send the traffic.

However, they cannot see anything after the first slash so for example, they know you visited Google, but they don’t know what you searched in Google. And they cannot see any of the actual traffic either because it is encrypted with a key that is unique to you and Google. Similarly, your Internet provider, your Wi-Fi router etc. cannot see the traffic either

(they can for http but almost all sites are https now)

On the other hand, the VPN can be configured to be what’s called a man in the middle. Which means that when you say hi, I want to talk to Google. It talks to Google pretends to be you now. They encryption key is not between you and Google but between the VPN and Google VPN decrypt the traffic and then it pretends to be Google and send the traffic to you so you think you’re talking to Google but actually you’re talking to VPN and the VPN is talking to Google.

You will know that this is happening cause in the browser you see you will see a giant warning saying that Google certificate is wrong

If you have something like a corporate laptop, then yeah corporate laptops have the VPN certificate preinstalled, which lets the VPN pretend to be anyone at all. also in some countries all devices have to be sold with a root certificate by the government, which would also let the government pretend to be anyone and thus see your traffic.

tldr if your browser doesn't complain then Ema doesn't see the google searches
